New site launched in the network

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

We have now launched a new site in the network, Best Very Funny Videos

The plan is to launch a fleet of humour sites, and this is the first sibling of the mothersite, www.very-funny-videos.com

Currently, the design is very much identical, but the idea is to set up the design individually for each site, yet this does not have a very high priority.

We welcome the new site to the network!

Stats up to July 22nd

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Today was a happy occasion when I loaded up my Google Analytics account to see what amount of visitors we recieve.

jul22stats.jpg
July 22nd was so far the best day, where we received 187 visitors.  We still have a long time to go to where we want to be, but it shows that a well-picked domain name, good programming, solid SEO planning ahead and a range of tricks actually helps! All traffic you can see above in the graph is purely organic traffic, and it is over the last 14 days. I wonder how the stats will look in a month, when we finish our programming and start rolling out our sister sites.

The images are back

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

We had a slight error in the setup earlier this week, where the content of the image-folder was accidently deleted.

All new visitors that did not have the graphics in their cache of their web browser could not see the layout of our site, but we have now fixed the error, and are back in business.

New feature added - Automatic tagging

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

Last night I added the new feature of automatic tagging to all new videos.

The backend has in fact been gathering tags and keywords automatically for all new added videos for quite some time, but it was not untill last night the programming was finalized to show the results correctly.

If you click on any of the “random tags” you will see on the site, http://www.very-funny-videos.com/tag/funny/ for instance, you will see the top 100 results of videos that has the keyword “funny” in its title or description.

The feature is totally automatic, and every time a new video is added, the database is updated. The resulting cloud increases the size of the link based on the amount of views and will eventually be a combined count of views and rating once the rating system has been finalized and implemented.

All tags are automatically added to the sitemap and submitted to Google every time for better indexation.

Enjoy this new feature, and wait for the next one that is soon to follow, which will make browsing for the videos you want to watch much much easier.

Problems with the feed

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

Last night I discovered a problem with the feed www.very-funny-videos.com/feed/ . I must have messed up something in the programming during my fine tuning of the code on the site. I wonder how long that problem have excisted? It cannot have been more than a few days at maximum, but that is still a problem due to the large amount of directory submitting I have done recently.

More news on new additions to the site will follow.

Version 1 launched - Updates are coming

Friday, July 6th, 2007

We just finished working on version 1 tonight, and the site is now fully running. We have opened up for the feed and have informed the search engines we are here. Focus here on the first version was to finish the design and setting up the core system as well as all the navigation options.

The SEO team has started working, as we mentioned in an earlier post. One of the ways the team is increasing backlinks is by creating screensavers of already purchased content, and spreading these screensavers on various software repositories. The next focus will be on putting out wallpapers tagged with our domain name.

The main SEO lies in the system itself. The system automatically collects, indexes and promotes the video clips. The core system has been proved working on another site, but this one is set to take on the big sites.

There are several other plans to increase back links, but these will be revealed gradually.

Planned features for this version, which will be gradually added:

  • Rating system for the clips (an alpha version is in the works right now)
  • Option to notify administrators of not-working/improper/lame videos
  • Comment system
  • Send link to friend via e-mail
  • Options to add clips to social bookmarking sites such as digg, del.icio.us and more.

Approaching launch-time

Friday, July 6th, 2007

We’re currently working on launching very-funny-videos.com!

We are however taking a small break right now, to relax a little bit. Converting the existing code to the new system, and making it work on the new hosting server is taking a bit more time than anticipated.

The SEO crew has already started working on increasing the visibility of the blog, so that has put additional stress on the rest of us, but its also giving us a good incentive to finishing our work!

We have given up getting all the features to work straight away though, but we hope that within a week, all planned features for version 1 will be ready and working without any failures.

Version 2 is being developed now

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

The current code behind go-lol.com which is the base of this upcoming system on Very Funny Videos is based on code that was hacked together over a year ago. The new system is basically being redesigned completely, and the code is being rewritten in several areas.

The system will have several new features that will lure visitors further into the big world of funny videos, and it will also enable users to decide which videos are the funniest and which should be removed from the system.

We expect much from the new version, and we expect you, the users, will appreciate our hard efforts.

Welcome to the Very-Funny-Videos.com blog

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

The system behind Very-Funny-Videos.com is still in development, and will be launched as soon as possible.

This blog will document the process behind the development of the system and the features to be implemented.

The system currently being developed is a new version of the system currently running on www.go-lol.com which will continue to function as it is now, and will eventually be propagated to the new system.

In order to ensure stable and reliable hosting, the servers have been set up to be hosted at Media Temple, who is well-known for their superior hosting and support.
